Discussion:
accuraterip database ???????

Then you have misconfigured EAC. Using EAC, I can rip the same CD over and
over on cheap LiteOn or Samsung drives and consistently get identical,
100%
accurate (as determined by the AccurateRip database) results.
can anyone tell me exactly what the "accuraterip database" is? how does it
work? and is there anyway to turn it "off" in the new version of EAC???

i asked about this b4 when i noticed that the new version of EAC returns an
error msg every time, something to do with not being able to connect to
accuraterip on my PC which is not connected to the internet, yet i got no
replies - what is accuraterip? i never heard of it b4 & have been using EAC
since the 1990s yet now it seems to be incorporated into EAC (????)

thanks,

The AccurateRip homepage is here:
http://www.accuraterip.com/

Basically, it is a big database of CRCs for extracted tracks, presumably
over many different CD drives. Therefore, if you get a CRC that matches
the one in the database, you can be fairly certain that the extraction
was successful and accurate. When you extract a track, it gives you the
"confidence" level, which is how many identical CRCs have been
submitted. Therefore, if, for example, you have a rare CD and only 1
other person has submitted it to the database, it may tell you that the
extraction might be inaccurate since the confidence is low, even though
it may be accurate in actuality. However, if the confidence is high
(most commonly with popular CDs), then you can be confident in the
results.

This, I am not sure of.

i did find that b4 but it just didn't make any sense to me, i couldn't
get my head around the logistics of it i guess

ok, i get it but i still struggle with some logistics...

does EAC do this accuraterip CRC checking by itself with no intervention
from the user?

and what if you rip as image + cuesheet instead of a track? does it work
with that or just track by track?

and how long does a CRC check back to the database take? wouldn't all that
add a lot more overhead to what EAC is doing (both time and resources)? and
what about if you are on dialup?? (or like my old PC with no connection at
all anymore!)

and where does EAC report it's findings with accuraterip? how do you even
know if you had a match, or a mismatch?

as a final comment - i don't use EAC for ripping official CDs - so as far as
i can tell, even assuming accuraterip is some great thing & works
wonderfully with EAC, i have zero use for it at all since nothing i use EAC
for would ever BE in its database so - perhaps a question for andre - can he
please release a new version of EAC that includes a way to NOT use
accuraterip???

it just seems that it is unnecessary overhead for someone
like me, plus i don't like programs trying to go out to the 'net & doing
"things" i don't want/need & incurring some kind of risk there - especially
in these paranoid computer times of not just malware/spyware/adware
targeting you but also crap like microsoft, the riaa, the mpaa, etc, all
phoning home, installing rootkits, and other "evil" things just because you
insert a CD, DVD, or any other kind of digital media in your PC

thanks :)

Yes, AccurateRip is integrated into EAC quite nicely, without the need for
any user intervention. The calculated CRCs are compared to the online
database (even when entire disks are ripped as image and cue) and you are
given the results in a summary after the job. If you have a broadband
connection to the Internet, the overhead isn't noticeable. Local CRCs are
batched and uploaded to AccurateRip according to a schedule you can control.

I like having another check for the accuracy of the rip, but it's not
necessary for you to use that to use EAC. I believe you can disable
AccurateRip in the EAC -> Drive Options menu (Offset/Speed tab) for the
selected drive. Currently, I have V0.99 prebeta 3 installed.

You can certainly find out much more on the forums, and I suggest you spend
some time there, especially if you're new to EAC. If you don't want or have
a fast Internet connection; wish to use EAC in a standalone, disconnected
configuration; or primarily rip non-commercial CDs (as you've suggested);
then AccurateRip probably is of little use to you. Disable it and don't fret
about it. EAC will work as well as ever--you'll just not have that one extra
assurance of accuracy.

I think it is great if the latest version of EAC turns
accuraterip on by default, because one of the biggest
problems of with Accuraterip has been that are many CDs
which are not in the database, or the CD is in the database
but only in a "different pressing" where none of the CRCs
match. (Maybe I have this problem more bacause I am in
Australia?)

Surely it must be possible to turn off if you don't have an
internet connection. There used to be an offline database
you could download (it was under 20 Mbytes compared to the
400+ Mbyte Freedb database) but they don't provide that anymore.

Being able to compare entire discs ripped as image+cue is news to me.
I'll have to check it out. Thanks.

THANKS! i couldn't find that but see it now - but here's
something really wierd! on both this PC (running XP connected to the 'net)
and my old PC (running win98se and no longer on the 'net) the option is
greyed out and i can't get to it! it appears to be "off" though (it is
unchecked)

originally i posted asking about accuraterip a few weeks/months ago because
everytime i started up the new version of EAC on my old PC i would get an
error message about it not being able to connect to accuraterip and that is
what had me on this quest to understand what it was and how to turn it off -
yet now i see it IS off, on both my PCs!!! i must be going crazy

i've been using EAC since around '97 and always found this forum (at yahoo)
the more useful one of the ones that i had found (also i prefer to just get
discussions in email rather than having to go up to a website), but i've
noticed this one has dried up quite a bit in recent years as far as
activity....i 4got about the other one that i recall was linked off the EAC
website & i'll take your advice and start checking that one and asking Qs
there if need be

thanks all

A simple way to "turn off" accuraterip function is to rename the file
"accuraterip.dll".
It should be in the EAC directory. I have changed its name in
"_accuraterip.dll", and EAC no longer pops up the connection fail
message.
