Discussion:
EAC does not recognize CD-drives

Dear All,
I have just installed EAC with Lame 3.97b2 as it was recommended by a friend.
I have done all the setup and checked against the seup of my friend - it is the same!
My EAC does not find any audio-CD in any of my 2 drives - other programs do, i.e. Musicmatch.
What have I done wrong or what do I need to check?
Could that have anything to do with XPC from Sony/BMG?
Regards,
Carsten

EAC is self-contained and has no known conflicts with other mastering
software. It would be wise to identify your drives here since the most
likely reason for the program failing to recognize the drives is that
they are not in its database. Someone here may know whether there is a
version which does.

Note that recognition is not needed for extraction, so I presume the
failure is for writing. Otherwise your problem may be that you need the
ASPI layer or that you have selected ASPI when your (unnamed) OS
provides the minidriver but you have not selected that option.

Hi

Looks like a aspi problem.
If the ixternal ASPI / ASAPI interface does not work you could try this:

Get the Nero ASPI layer from here:
ftp://ftp6.nero.com/wnaspi32.dll
Simply click on the link and save the file to your EAC directory
Then you

1) Restart EAC.
2) Go to EAC menu.
3) Choose EAC options.
4) Click the interface tab.
5) Select your new external ASPI / ASAPI interface.
6) OK your selection and restart EAC.

Hope this helps

Guy

is there a 'best' or 'latest' or 'most up to date' version of
wnaspi32.dll that should be used for EAC? this earlier message
mentions suggests using the one from nero. the adaptec web page
also has a wnaspi32.dll that has a different version that the one
from nero.

whose is better / best?

secondly, does it matter where the wnaspi32.dll lives - in the EAC
folder, the C:\WINDOWS\system32 folder, the C:\WINDOWS\system32
\drivers folder, C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache, in all four???

Hi,

I don't know if any one aspi is better than the other, but I do know
that it appears to work when I drop it into the EAC main folder. If
I don't drop it in this folder then the external aspi interface is
greyed out. So it does appear to work. I think as long as it works,
then that's all that matters.

hmm... i will have to try that. i have been dropping it in the
system32 folder, and that seemed to help, some, but not 'perfect'. i
am getting good burns (extract and compare to teh hard drive version
is exact). i also see a long time for the lead-in write to finish,
during which i see several megabytes being written and then a sudden
jump in the progress bar into track 1, not the start, but into. and
there is some accordioning of the buffer

I removed /all/ my wnaspi32.dll copies except for the most recent
release which I keep in the system32 folder. That way there is only one
to work with and I know where it lives. with multiple copies you do not
know which copy will be picked up. It could pick up a copy that is NG.

My experience: most recent and place it in the system32 folder. It can
be in any folder in the search path, but sys32 makes the most sense to me.

Cheers

Wholehearted agreement from here.

Remember, too, that the first DLL loaded is the last to be loaded. If
the wrong one is picked up, the right one cannot be installed until
Windows is reloaded!

WNASOPI was butchered (changed without regard to the constraints) by
various hardware manufacturers. As a result, multiple incompatible
versions were floating around with varying dates and version numbers.
For that reason, Roxio's ancestor gave up on sorting out WNASPI and
interfaced directly in its program.

That is also a reason to prefer using the internal driver instead of
WNASPI - if it works on your NT system.
