Discussion:
Data Track As Track 1

I have a CD which has a data track as the first track, and when I rip
the CD using Exact Audio Copy it skips it and goes from track 2 to 16
[there are 15 audio tracks]. The new version allows for the first
track's number to be set, but it will not accept ‘0’ as the number. I
had the idea of using ‘0’ as the first track's number so audio tracks
2 through 16 would be ripped as tracks 1 through 15. How can I get
around having the tracks start from 2?

Also, the non-compliant cue sheet displayed ‘Track 1 MODE2/XXX’ or
something to that affect, so how would that effect the burning if I
were to write the output copy to a CD-R/CD-RW? I have never seen that
in a cue sheet before.

It’s the rare CD that has the data track. Seems to me it is easier to just fix this manually for the occasional data track CD rather than causing a whole new development effort…..

BTW, affect and effect are reversed in the language below. (sorry. I am affected with the effects of interchanging these words!)

Andre, thanks so much for this great software.

I can’t wait to load V1.0 on my Sony laptop running win 7 to see if it starts to work. EAC 99 does not work on this machine. This will dispel any worries that I have that Sony built anti-EAC software into the BIOS!

Hahaha, how would I fix this manually then? I can alter the internal
tags and such but all that would mess up the CRC values which I
definitely do not want to happen. Plus, should not data tracks be at
the end of the CD instead of before?

I think this is allowed according to the specifications (mixed mode =
Red Book and Yellow Book) - the only structure the disc has to adhere
to is:
TOC -> lead-in -> program area -> lead-out -> basic error correction
(I'm not entirely sure if the above order is completely correct - TOC
might be contained in lead-in - but you get the idea.)

Data tracks can be at the beginning or the end (in fact theoretically
they can be everywhere - it is a bit complicated and has to do with
sessions. Basically the computer finds all data tracks at the beginning
of a session). In earlier times they only manufactured CDs which had a
single session, modern CDs have usually the data track in a second
sesssion (at the end). A CD player can't "see" the second session, so it
only access the data tracks at the beginning.

How could that mess up with the CRC values? For what do you need the CRC
values?

In fact I do already on the "Registration" page ;)

I'm not sure why you would want to renumber tracks - technically the
data track *is* the first track, as also indicated by the cue sheet.

My own method may not be an accurate representation of the original
CD, but it allows for easy scripting. Plus if you keep the cue sheet,
it's always possible to infer the original disc layout if you need to
(re)burn it:
- Rip audio part of CD according to the Xuncat guide, so you end up
with tracks 01_%title%, 02_%title, etc.
- Make a directory "00_multimedia" (so it always sorts at the top)
- Copy all the CD-ROM data from the CD into this directory

Otherwise, just renumbering the tracks (with Mp3tag, for instance)
after ripping takes all of 10 seconds.

Hope I got my points across - the coffee machine at work is broken.
;-( Cup of tar anyone?

Martin

I decided to just keep it as it is. I made the multimedia folder the
title of the first track with the 01 prefix, so it looks like 16
tracks but the first one is a folder. It is best to keep everything
original, and that folder thing works out nicely.
